Welcome back to our Intermediate Japanese Course! Today, we’ll focus on Japanese conjunctions—words like 「けど」「のに」「だから」 that help connect thoughts and ideas smoothly in conversations.
🔹 1. Expressing Contrast: 「けど」「のに」「しかし」
1️⃣ 「けど」 – “But” / Soft contrast
✅ この映画は面白かったけど、ちょっと長かった。 (*This movie was interesting, but it was a little long.*)
✅ 日本語は難しいけど、楽しい! (*Japanese is difficult, but fun!*)
2️⃣ 「のに」 – “Even though” / Unexpected contrast
✅ 雨が降っているのに、彼は傘を持っていない。 (*Even though it’s raining, he doesn’t have an umbrella.*)
✅ たくさん勉強したのに、試験に落ちた。 (*Even though I studied a lot, I failed the test.*)
3️⃣ 「しかし」 – Formal “However”
✅ このレストランは安い。しかし、とても美味しい。 (*This restaurant is cheap. However, it’s very delicious.*)
🔹 2. Giving Reasons & Explaining: 「だから」「それで」
4️⃣ 「だから」 – “So” / Giving a reason
✅ 寒い。だから、コートを着た。 (*It’s cold. So, I wore a coat.*)
5️⃣ 「それで」 – “And then” / Showing a result
✅ 昨日寝るのが遅かった。それで、今日は眠い。 (*I slept late yesterday. That’s why I’m sleepy today.*)
🔹 3. Conversation Examples
Example 1: Talking about a problem
🧑 A: 昨日、たくさん勉強したのに、試験ができなかった… (*Even though I studied a lot yesterday, I couldn’t do well on the test…*)
👩 B: そうなんだ。それで、どうするの? (*I see. So, what will you do?*)
Example 2: Expressing opinions
🧑 A: 日本語は難しいけど、楽しいね! (*Japanese is difficult, but fun!*)
👩 B: うん!だから、もっと話せるようになりたい! (*Yeah! That’s why I want to be able to speak more!*)
