What is “Kokugo”?
In Japan, “Kokugo” is a subject that Japanese children study in school.
It’s similar to language arts or mother tongue classes in other countries—where students learn not only how to read and write, but also how to understand the deeper meaning of words and stories.

「国語（こくご）」って なに？
日本では、小学校から「国語」という きょうか（教科）が あります。
たんご を おぼえる だけじゃなく、ぶんしょう の よみかた や、ことば の いみ を ふかく まなぶ じゅぎょう です。
がいこく に ある「Language Arts（言語の じゅぎょう）」に にているかも しれません。

From now on, this blog will take a new shape:
The lessons will feel more like Japanese Kokugo class.

これから、このブログ は「国語（こくご）」の じゅぎょう の ように すすんで いきます。

Not just learning how to “speak” Japanese,
but learning how to understand the meaning behind words and sentences.

たんご や かいわ だけでなく、
ことば の いみ や ぶんしょう の よみかた を、たいせつ に していきます。

🧠 Why “Kokugo”?

In regular Japanese learning, the focus is often on vocabulary and conversation.

ふつう の にほんご がくしゅう では、たんご や かいわ を おぼえる こと が ちゅうしん です。

But Kokugo (国語) is deeper.
It’s about learning the true meaning of words, how to read and interpret Japanese.

でも、「国語（こくご）」は もっと ふかく、
ことば の いみ や、ぶんしょう の こころ を まなぶ こと です。

It’s what Japanese children study to understand their own language.

にほん の こども たち が、にほんご の きそ を まなぶ のが「国語」 なんです。

🔮 Examples You Can Only Understand Through “Kokugo”

🟠 Example 1: The Many Meanings of “Sumimasen”

“Sumimasen” doesn’t just mean “I’m sorry.”

• When you bump into someone → “Excuse me / I’m sorry”
• When someone helps you → “Thank you”
• When calling someone → “Excuse me!”

The same word changes meaning depending on the situation and tone.
Understanding this is part of what Kokugo teaches.

「すみません」は、「ごめんなさい」だけ じゃ ありません。

• だれか に ぶつかった → ごめんなさい
• てつだって もらった → ありがとう
• よびかけ たい とき → すみません

つかう ばめん や かんじょう に よって、いみ が かわります。
これ を まなべる の が、国語 なんです。

🟠 Example 2: The Real Meaning of “Reading the Air”

“Reading the air” (空気を読む) sounds strange at first.
Like… how do you read air?

But as you read more Japanese, you’ll start to understand how people express things without saying them directly.
That’s when the phrase starts to make sense.

「空気を読む」って、へん な ことば に きこえる かも しれません。

でも、ぶんしょう を よんで、ひと の きもち や いいたい こと を かんじとる けいけん が ふえる と……

「空気を読む」こと が ほんとう に できる よう に なります。

This kind of understanding can only grow through Kokugo-style learning.

こういう こと は、「国語」 じゃないと まなべません。
