「すみません」は、いろいろな 気もちを つたえる ことば。
あやまるとき、よびかけるとき、
そして「ありがとう」の 気もちを こめることも あります。

"Sumimasen" is a very useful Japanese word.
It can mean “excuse me,” “I’m sorry,” or even “thank you” depending on the situation.

📖 ストーリー | The Story

なおとは、としょかんで 本を さがしていました。
たくさんの 本が ならんでいて、どこに あるか わかりません。

そこに、しずかに たっている 女の人が いました。
なおとは、ゆっくり ちかづいて、こえを かけました。

「すみません、この 本は どこに ありますか？」

女の人は にっこり わらって、いっしょに 本を さがしてくれました。

「ありがとう ございます。」

なおとは、頭を さげました。

そのあと、なおとは ともだちの あやかと あいました。
あやかの ノートが なおとの カバンに まちがえて はいっていて、あやかが こまっていました。

「ごめん！すみません！」

なおとは あわてて ノートを わたしました。
あやかは ちいさく わらって、「だいじょうぶだよ」と いいました。

なおとは、ほっと しました。

Naoto was at the library, looking for a book.
There were so many books that he couldn’t find the one he wanted.

He saw a quiet woman nearby.
He walked over and said softly,

“Sumimasen, do you know where this book is?”

The woman smiled and helped him find it.

“Thank you very much,” said Naoto, bowing.

Later, Naoto met his friend Ayaka.
Her notebook had gotten mixed up in Naoto’s bag by mistake.

“Oh no! I’m sorry—sumimasen!”

He quickly gave the notebook back.
Ayaka smiled and said, “It’s okay.”

Naoto felt relieved.

💡 ワンポイント | Cultural Tip

「すみません」は、「しつれいします」「ごめんなさい」「ありがとう」など、
いろいろな 気もちを つたえる ことばです。
とても つかいやすいけれど、気もちを こめて つかうことが たいせつです。

"Sumimasen" can be used to say excuse me, I'm sorry, or even thank you.
It’s a small word, but a big part of Japanese kindness and care.
